JOB DESCRIPTION: WORSHIP DIRECTOR
Reports To: Pastor
Position Type: Salaried, Part-Time (Target: 10–15 hours/week)

The Worship Director provides comprehensive artistic leadership for the music ministry of Vista Lutheran Church, managing music selection and choir direction to foster a vibrant worship environment.
Worship Planning & Collaboration: Partners closely with the Pastor and Organists to plan services and select weekly hymns and music. Collaborates with Organists on the artistic selection of guest musicians, accompanists, and soloists.
Administration: Provides final music choices and leadership schedules to the Office Administrator at least one month in advance. Relies on office staff to handle detailed calendar logistics, formatting, and the printing of large-print music. Responsible for administration of copyright licenses and reporting. Attends monthly Worship and Music Ministry meetings.
Choir Direction & Vocal Leadership: Leads Wednesday rehearsals and directs the Choir for Sunday worship on a modified schedule of three Sundays per month, utilizing alternative music options on off-weeks. Directs the choir for seasonal services, including Ash Wednesday, midweek Lent, Holy Week, Easter, Christmas Eve, Grace in the Park and other services, as determined.
Choir Care & Growth: Recruits new members from both the church and the wider community, encourages regular rehearsal attendance, and monitors member well-being by reaching out during extended absences.
Other Special Services: Coordinates music and participates in weddings and funerals as requested, which includes forming special choral groups or musical ensembles for funeral services.
Hours & Seasonal Flexibility: Averages 10–15 hours per week routinely, with the understanding that hours may flex upward slightly during high holy seasons (Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week) and reduce during other times of the year, including summer.
Core Requirements: Requires demonstrated proficiency in choral conducting and vocal rehearsal leadership, strong collaborative and organizational skills, and pastoral sensitivity for member care and special services. A foundational understanding of Lutheran liturgical seasons and hymnody is preferred.
